Pigeons: fling rats, horrible disease carrying critters. A bird we could all do without, right?

Actually no; I’d sooner sell my house than get rid of this actually rather unique bird. OK, so yes they may have a knack for pooing on people in public places (and I for one have been many times a victim), but there is much more to the pigeon than meets the eye.

We’re talking a lot.

Did you know that pigeons are one of the few types of bird that can actually recognize their own reflection in the mirror? Yes, in reality pigeons are the geniuses of the bird world; the unsung heroes of intellectual thinking. There’s even an explanation for their odd strutting behaviour, and here it is:

Pigeons strut not because it makes them look cool in front of other birds (though I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them exaggerated this to do exactly that) but because they have very little choice if they want to be able to see where they are going. Yes, pigeons strut to focus on things in front of them, they just can’t be off of it. If you ever see a pigeon walking about normally then you had better call the RSPCA because that pigeon is about to end up in a whole world of trouble–

Even more impressively, pigeons are said to have a memory of past events. So when they do a poo on you and you scream at them saying you will rip his or her beak off (but usually “Its"because you don’t care about gender at that moment) they will remember that for months to come.

Which must make them smile.
